The Finger Family - Plot 117

Theodore Finger, a native of Germany and reportedly a participant in the Mexican War, came to Redwood City in 1855. Finger acquired a farm along Cordilleras Creek, which at that time was more than a mile from the town of Redwood City. Finger Grove, as it became known, was a favorite picnic site for weekend visitors from San Francisco.

In November 1861, Lawrence Finger, age 21 months, was the first of this family to be buried in Union Cemetery. In 1882, Theodore buried another son, Herman, who was killed when a piece of heavy machinery fell on him while he as at work in the City. Herman was 34 years old and left a wife and three children.

Five years later, in August of 1887, Theodore was buried beside his sons. He was the victim of an accident that occurred while he was crossing the railroad tracks near his home. He was eulogized as an exceedingly public spirited and benevolent man who had furnished the meeting place of fraternal organizations who wished to have outings in San Mateo County.

One of the Finger daughters married Mr. Fremont Older when the latter was the editor of a Redwood City newspaper.
